Keeping Calm

This last while I've probably been under as much stress as when Riley was due into the world. The shadow of an operation is hanging over me and I'm starting to feel the side effects to so much stress. Especially as I'm obviously unwell.

I would get ''quickenings'' a lot. Not like the type in Highlander. There will be no beheadings here today! A quickening is the name I give to those little flutters that aren't quite panic attacks.

Through years of dealing with different kinds of panic attacks I can safely say these are the least of my concern however they are still there and of course I don't get to choose when. They come on themselves. Terribly presumptive of them to think they'd be welcome.

For a short period of time a few years ago I remember a medication concoction working.
Half Inderal and Citalopram went some way for a little time in combatting the quickened heartbeat and the slight tightness of chest. However, it didn't combat them for long.

I've tried the elastic band trick, works for about a day maybe. You have an elastic band on your wrist and when you feel panic you snap it. It's also supposed to work for OCD tendencies. I just found it a pain to be honest.

Today I wanted to show you something simple that works a little for me, at the moment.

Como Shambhala Calm Balm

This little balm is packed full of ingredients aimed at rebalancing your senses. With a blend containing marjoram (used to calm irritability, sedative and relaxing brainwaves) geranium (used in stress relieving aromatherapy etc) bergamot (frequently used as homeopathic treatment for anxiety and depression) and of course lavender (helps with sleeping and relaxation)

I am one to try whatever naturally sourced methods I can, as well as medicated routes in the quest to find what works for me. This little Calm Balm was great over Christmas. I do love the smell, it's very heady and quite musky, conjures up warm feelings. You apply it to pulse points ie; your neck and wrists. In truth it's a great little product. I couldn't honestly tell you if the ingredients are the reason for the calming effect it has or if it is in fact the basic concentration you spend rolling it onto your pulse points. Misdirection is a useful tool with light panic attacks. So taking just a minute to roll Calm Balm onto your wrists is long enough sometimes to use concentration elsewhere and gives your body a minute to switch back.  Either which way it's an aide. And it's a good aide. Budget friendly and easily picked up, packed full of feel good oils it may just offer you the split second you need before your ''quickening'' hits nuclear status.

There are many different concoctions of Como Shambhala you can pick up, all aimed at your senses ie; Harmony blend, Invigorate blend, Comfort blend and Purify blend.

This Como Shambhala Calm Balm can be picked up in the Armani Exchange at The Outlet, Banbridge (who were kind enough to send me this one to try) and before we wrap up for the day here, another great method? Shopping. I'm not even kidding. Women produce happy hormones when they shop, mind you that's if you can cope ok with outdoors! If you can and if you're in the mood I know the Armani, DKNY and LK Bennett stores at The Outlet, Banbridge have some SERIOUS sales going on right now, plus you can pick up this little Calm Balm whilst you're there. I also prescribe cake.

I hope you found this post of some use.

What are your calming methods?

  1. I also tend to be highly anxious at the best of times and do succumb to panic attacks when I feel things are spiralling out of control. Like you the elastic band trick didn't work for me. Though I find mindfulness really helps - focusing intently on what you're doing at that time (the sight, sound, scent and feel of it) to take you out of your head and back into the world. I must get me some of this calm balm, sounds like it would be great to use in conjunction with practicing mindfulness. Thanks Sera :) x

    1. Sorry to hear that Kat but you're so right mindfulness is the only thing that works for me even a small degree is progress! I'd highly recommend it even, as you say, it takes you out of your head for the time it takes to apply it. Can only be a good thing. Thanks so much for the comment xx

  2. Hope you get sorted soon with your op - it's been dragging on for so long, no wonder you are stressed. I have a Neal's Yard roll-on like this and I find it quite helpful for relaxing. I bring it with me travelling. Rescue Remedy is great too…I swear by it when under pressure! Hope you have a good weekend, in spite of the discomfort you're in. Avril x

  4. That sounds like a great find. I know with myself, misdirection is definitely a big help to avert any panic-related issues. Just sitting back and breathing really helps.
    Yes, and cake, too. ;)

  5. Oh looks interesting, I am a fan of Rescue Remedy and taking off a layer of clothing. When I get stressed I get really warm so just cracking a window or taking off a jumper can start to chill me out again.
